The Division
is joining the University in examining better ways to
access instruction in the classroom, studio and rehearsal
hall. This is an ongoing challenge to ensure that
our students graduate with appropriate skills and knowledge.
Current estimates
have approximately 75 incoming freshman for the 2001 fall
semester. This maintains the Division's goal of
300+ music majors. |

Hello,
again. You know the old saws; so fill in the blanks.
Water,
water everywhere, but not a ___________.
You
can lead a horse to water, but you can't _____________.
I'm
in over my _____. It never rains but what it _____.
What
have these to do with West Virginia??? FLOODS! Terrible
flooding has occurred in the central and southern parts
of the state. What has this to do with us??? Money,
I guess. We have a state that has financial
problems now made worse by floods that have wiped out
(or seriously damaged) businesses in our most affluent
areas; hence, incoming business taxes will be less than
anticipated. Some of our students may have lost
homes, or parents have lost jobs, and school money will
be "iffy." The normal channels for loans and scholarships
are already fulfilled for 2001-2002. The Music
Alumni Assoc. may be called upon more than ever to help
gifted and now financially stressed students. It is our
responsibility to do what we can, and we ask for your
help. We have so much
to
be grateful for-including sharing.
Meantime, our new Dean is busy. Dr. Bess continues
to serve with a smile. Since I've not been keeping
up to date due to some personal afflictions, I must
assume that Theatre and Art are busting at the gate to
get started in a few days. Where HAS summer gone?????
Have you had a good season, or were you caught "Walking
in the Rain?" Your board wishes you well.
We would REALLY like to hear from you. Even if your dues
are paid, send a brief note. If your dues aren't
paid, don't forget we have real and legitimate use for
ANY
thing you can send, especially over and above dues...($.20
weekly with 2 wks off for vacation).
Best wishes, safe summer, happy days!
"Jackie"

From
the Chair
During the
spring meeting of the MAA Executive Board in March,
2001 Dave Bess (MM'84 - PHD'88), the new chair of the
Division, shared several interesting facts. Below
is a bulleted version of his report.
· Enrollment
from the 2001 spring semester showed 249 undergraduate
music majors, 61 graduate music students, and 45 music
minors.
· The
quality of the students continues to increase citing
continuing improvements in ensembles.Production of the
Magic Flute was superb. The placement rate for
non-geographic bound music education graduates has been
100% for the past several years. These graduates
receive generally better positions than 10+ years ago,
and graduates continue to excel in the professional
musician ranks.
· The
music curriculum continues to be revised with a recent
implementation of proficiencies in all secondary instruments
(including piano and voice) for music education majors.
