C.  Faculty Achievements

  • Laura Kobayashi performed as an invited guest artist at Arizona State University and the National CMS meeting at Santa Fe, NM
  • John Beall and Bill Skidmore are teaching this summer at Interlochen.
  • Peter Lightfoot performed the Mozart Requiem at Carnegie Hall in NYC last June.
  • Don Wilcox conducted six honor/all-state bands around the country this spring.
  • Publication of Chris Wilkinson's book, "Jazz on the Road: Don Albert's Musical Life".
  • Curtis Johnson's "Real Silk Band" continues to win major jazz awards.
  • Professor Virginia Thompson was elected President of the International Horn Society during its annual symposium in Beijing, China.

Last academic year the Division had a total of 350 students with 72 graduate and 278 in the undergraduate program.  The Division has hired one new faculty member and promoted  another.  Peter Kolkay will be joining the faculty in the fall as our new bassoon and theory instructor.  He received a BM at Lawrence University in 1998, a MM and Performer's Certificate from Eastman School of Music in 2000, and a MMA from Yale University in 2002.  Professor Kolkay was awarded first prize at the 2002 Concert Artists Guild International Compe

"What's in it for me?" -  A Message from Your MAA President

This is a very valid question you may be asking as you read this expanded issue of Con Moto and find our annual request for you to become a dues paying member of the WVU Music Alumni Association.  Before we share a few moments I would like to introduce myself as your new president. 
My name is Chuck Kerzak and I have a BM and MM from WVU, 1991, 1993 respectively.  After teaching high school band for three years at Roane County High School in Spencer, WV, I returned to Morgantown to join my wife Kathy (Loftin) MM 92.  After a year in the substitute teaching meat market I was offered a position under then Dean Phil Faini working development in the College of Creative Arts.  Seven years later I am with the WVU Foundation traveling the nation to work with alumni during the
Building Greatness Campaign.  All this from a fellow who hated to sell pizza kits and stromboli's as a high school band member.

This past April I assumed the leadership position in the MAA from Jackie Harrison and began to work with several Executive Board members to increase the visibility of this organization among its alumni base.  On page six you will find a condensed list of what we have to offer for your $20 a year, but the importance of this organization goes well beyond those items.
Perhaps the mission statement of MAA, taken from its bylaws and constitution says it all: "…..to promote, recruit and advance the interests and welfare of the WVU Division of Music, and to foster a spirit of fraternity and loyalty among graduates…..".  As alumni we have both an active and passive part to play in the Division of Music.  Let us look at how you can be more of a "player".
