tend WVU.  We all probably know high school age students who are talented musicians, good role models, and community volunteers.  Do you tell them about WVU?  Can you direct them to the correct person at the University to answer questions or arrange for a visit?  What are the Division's top programs, student accomplishments?  If you would have problems answering any of these questions, MAA is here to help.
Con Moto scratches the surface, but there are many more tidbits that could fit in this newsletter.  Our monthly email and quarterly paper news updates will help you get to know the Division, its faculty and students.   Been away from Morgantown for a few years?  We're working to get you back in the fold!  Wish you could have heard the WVU Wind Ensemble perform at the Kennedy Center but found out too late to make plans to attend?  You'll know as soon as we do via the webpage, earlier via email if you're a member.  The close working relationship between MAA and Dave Bess, the chair of the Division and WVU alumnus, makes this new level of communication possible.  All my thanks to Dave!

At its April 2002 meeting, the MAA Executive Board underscored the importance of increased interaction with the alumni base, thus the development of these initiatives.  The Board felt that the more you knew about today's Division of Music, the more active you could become--each in his or her own way. We can help facilitate the flow of information, and provide you the tools to take the next step.
I invite you to be our critic as we roll out the membership benefits over the next several months.  There are twenty Board members--drop a note or email to one and tell them what you think--good and bad.  What can we do better--what is working well the way it is?  What would you like MAA to provide to its members and alumni?  Take this first step and become an active alumnus.  Send us twenty dollars and I promise we'll do more than your retirement portfolio!

dale, Florida.  In his scrapbook there are many pages of excellent reviews and referrals from such notables as Daniel Mitziga, President and CEO of the Boca Pops; Derek Mills, "Opera Digest"; Tim Smith, "The Sun Sentinel"; and many other reviewers and critics.  Tom has worked with a variety of performers including Anson Williams, Roberta Peters and Jerome Hines.
In real life, the Cavendishs have collaborated in producing two children: Michael, an attorney and Julie, a lead ballerina with the Sarasota Ballet.  As a growing family they loved to camp and fish.  Vacations then took them to the mountains--a reminder for two misplaced northerners of the beauty they left behind..  A charmed life?  New opportunities opened just as the young Thomas Cavendish came along, from schooling to marriage, and Prince Charming has his fair lady as his mate in music and life.  Our best wishes go to you for continued success.                                 Story by Jacqueline Harrison

WVMEA Conference Reception boasts Record Attendance

More than 75 alumni and friends of the WVU Division of Music attended the 4th annual WVMEA Conference Reception held at the Charleston Civic Center Holiday Inn this past March.  This event is cosponsored by the WVU Music Alumni Association and the WVU Division of Music.

The Reception is a great opportunity for alumni to meet old friends, network, and share some war stories from their days at WVU.  There is no charge for the reception and all WVU Music Alumni are encouraged to attend.  The next reception will be held in conjunction with the spring 2003 WVMEA Conference in Huntington.  Details will be included in the spring issue of
Con Moto and on MAA's website.  We hope you will join us!
