Text Box: Dr. Kenneth Ozzello is currently the Director of Bands at the University of Alabama.  He received his Bachelors in Music Education from WVU and began his career as a Director Text Box:      He gave up his position at WVU and moved to Tuscaloosa to become the drill designer for the University of Alabama “Million Dollar Band”. His shows were performed nationwide at the Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, 1992 Nation Championship Sugar Bowl, over a dozen Iron Bowls, and nine Southeastern Conference Bowl games. 
     
     In 1989, Ozzello became Assistant Director of Bands and associate professor in the School of Music at the University of Alabama. During this time he earned his Doctorate of Education from the University.  

     A short eight years later, Ozzello accepted the offer to become the Director of Bands at UA.  His duties in this new position were to conduct the University’s Symphonic Band and to oversee all University Concert Bands’ financial affairs, staff, and activities. In addition to those duties he teaches several academic classes in the School of Music, including conducting and music education methods classes. He also maintains a busy schedule as a clinician and guest conductor.

Text Box:      When you listen to Mary Ellen Burhans recalling memories of her early days at the WVU School of Music, you realize the big smile, the bright eyes, the shock of gray hair held back by a shiny barrette, and the upbeat lilt in her voice belie the 90 plus years she boasts.  

     The WVU School of Music is fortunate to have two “golden treasures”: living in

Martha Manning (class of 1932) and Mary Ellen Fishbach Burhans (class of 1933) remember the same faculty and events, but Mary Ellen has a lovingly kept scrapbook filled with programs from concerts, baccalaureate, and graduation, as well as newspaper clippings, photographs and mementos.(Continued on page 15)

of Bands at Jeanette High School in the Pittsburgh area.  He remained at this job for five years and then returned to West Virginia University to continue his studies, obtaining his Masters of Music in Conducting. 

 

     Ozzello then joined the staff at West Virginia University as the assistant director of bands.  Of his time in Morgantown Ozzello says: "My degrees from West Virginia gave me the opportunity to realize my professional goals.  I wanted to become a college band director and Don Wilcox open the doors necessary to make that happen.   I am constantly singing the praises of West Virginia University."
